Federal authorities have named 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus as the suspect in a fatal vehicle explosion targeting a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California. The FBI confirmed Bartkus, who reportedly espoused nihilistic beliefs, died in the blast, which they classified as an “intentional act of terrorism.”

The explosion occurred shortly before 11:00 a.m. local time on Saturday near American Reproductive Centers (ARC), a facility specializing in in vitro fertilization (IVF). No clinic staff or patients were injured, though the bombing damaged nearby businesses. Investigators revealed Bartkus detonated a large improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a 2010 silver Ford Fusion sedan and allegedly attempted to livestream the attack.

Investigation Details

Law enforcement sources confirmed the device was a “vehicle-borne IED,” with the FBI’s Los Angeles field office leading the inquiry. Agents executed a search warrant at Bartkus’ residence in Twentynine Palms—a community approximately 50 miles from Palm Springs—and evacuated neighboring homes as a precaution. Authorities emphasized there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Akil Davis, the FBI’s assistant director in Los Angeles, stated investigators are reviewing a manifesto believed to be linked to Bartkus and seeking public assistance to reconstruct his movements prior to the attack. The bureau plans to maintain a presence at the blast site for at least 48 hours to gather evidence.

Background and Motive

Bartkus, a resident of Twentynine Palms near a major U.S. Marine Corps base, is suspected of deliberately targeting the IVF clinic. While the FBI has not yet disclosed a definitive motive, the manifesto under review may shed light on his ideological motivations.

Ongoing Inquiry

Police and federal officials continue to analyze forensic evidence and digital records to determine the full scope of the plot. The FBI urged anyone with information about Bartkus’ activities in the days leading to the explosion to contact their tip line.
