Denzel Washington had a tense exchange with a photographer during the Cannes Film Festival on Monday, as captured in footage reviewed by Fox News Digital.
The incident occurred during the premiere of Highest 2 Lowest, directed by Spike Lee and featuring Washington in a leading role. While on the red carpet, Washington was seen speaking with Lee as musician A$AP Rocky approached. According to Page Six, a photographer allegedly reached out and made physical contact with the actor in an attempt to get his attention.
The gesture appeared to provoke a strong reaction from Washington. In the video, the Academy Award winner can be seen pointing his finger at the photographer and audibly saying, “Stop,” as tensions escalated. Some photographers nearby were seen laughing during the interaction. As Washington turned to walk away, the photographer seemed to grab his arm, prompting an even more forceful response from the actor, who repeated, “Stop it!”
Fox News Digital reports that they have reached out to Washington’s representatives for comment on the incident.
Despite the disruption, Washington’s evening took a celebratory turn. Prior to the screening of his new film, he was honored with an unexpected presentation of the honorary Palme d’Or. Festival director Thierry Frémaux addressed the audience, praising Washington’s contributions to cinema.
“It’s a very special day. Denzel, because you are here, we want to make something special for you,” Frémaux said, according to Deadline. “It’s our way of expressing our admiration for all you’ve done in film. Only Spike Lee was aware of this beforehand.”
Lee joined Washington on stage to present the award. “This is my brother. I love him, and I’m happy he’s here among people who love him too,” he told the audience.
Washington expressed gratitude during his acceptance remarks, stating: “This is a total surprise for me, so I’m a little emotional. But from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.”
He continued, “It’s a great privilege to be back in Cannes and to collaborate once more with my brother, Spike. We’re fortunate to make movies, wear tuxedos, and be a part of this world. I feel truly blessed, and I thank you sincerely.”
